4th Blog Entry - Civilized VS Uncivilized

Selfie is a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website:

"occasional selfies are acceptable, but posting a new picture of yourself everyday isn’t necessary"

CIVILIZED
CIVILIZED SELFIE

These photos are called civilized selfies. The proper taking of selfie. The first photo shows that I am happy with my served food. The second photo shows that I am proud that I was there at Cowrie Island, Puerto Princesa and the last photo shows that I am wearing my proper uniform and I'm ready to go to school.

UNCIVILIZED

UNCIVILIZED SELFIE

This photos are called uncivilized selfies. The first photo shows that I am in office, that was during my internship at AFPSLAI, and I am just playing instead of doing my work. The second photo shows that I am playing with the food. And the last photo shows I am holding an alcoholic drink.

Blog Entry No. 3 Part 1 - MMFF PAGPAG: ANG SIYAM NA BUHAY

MMFF or Metro Manila Film Festival is an annual film festival held in Manila. This year, there are 8 official entries announced by MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino namely Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy, Pagpag: Ang Siyam na Buhay, My Little Bossings, Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel, 10,000 Hours, Pedro Calungsod: Ang Batang Martyr, Boy Golden and Kaleidoscope World. Luckily, I was able to watched these 3 movies, Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy, Pagpag and My Little Bossings, in 3 consecutive days. And these 3 movies were the top 3 with the highest grosses.

Last December 27, 2013, I watched Pagpag: Ang Siyam na Buhay with my boyfriend and brother. I chose this movie for my blog entry because even if this is  horror movie, I liked it.

Pagpag: Ang Siyam na Buhay is a Filipino horror and suspense film starring Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, Shaina Magdayao and Paulo Avelino, directed by Frasco Mortiz and released it last December 25, 2013.

The concept of the movie is based on a Filipino superstitious belief that one should never go home directly after visiting awake since it risks bringing evil spirits to one's home. One should first shake off (Pagpag) whatever curse there may be to avoid being trailed by the soul of the dead.

Elements of the Film:

1. Music/ Soundtrack - The film Pagpag doesn't have an official soundtrack but the catchy part is that people knows that commercial is Pagpag when they hear a child singing "SINO YANG KASAMA MO?" The film used horror sound effects to set the mood of the audience.

2. Acting- The actors and actresses in the film really did a great job. They delivered and act their lines properly and you can really feel what they feel. Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla do really have a chemistry. People inside the theater giggling because of them.

3. Cinematography- It is better. I like it because I understand the movie. The scenes were good because of you can connect them immediately.

4. Dialogue- "Good dialogue is essential for a movie to be perfect, but a good dialogue can also make a poor story. The dialogue of the film is good because you really understand the story and what they're saying. But in some scenes, sound effects are louder than an actor's dialogue.

5. Story- The story is about young visitors that doesn't believe in superstitions. They didn't know that Shaina has an intention to them. They didn't know that Shaina will kill 9 people so that her husband will be alive. But Shaina doesn' know that Kathryn's brother, who can see apparitions, is her first baby. At the end, Kathryn and Daniel solved there problem with the help of Clarence and Matet. The visitors died connected with the violation they did in the wake. The story of Pagpag was great. It was great because it tells us how Filipino believe in superstitions.

3rd Blog Entry Part 2 - Ded Na Si Lolo

This independent film entitled "Ded na si Lolo" starring Gina Alajar, Elizabeth Oropesa, Dick Israel, Manily Reynes, BJ Forbes, Rainier Castillo and Roderick Paulate is directed by Soxie H. Topacio. This film was shown in cinemas last May 6, 2009.

This independent film entitled, Ded na si Lolo (Granpa is Dead) is a very Filipino way especially in having an impact with the superstitious traditions like in the story where a family member has passed away.
This Filipino tradition is so normal that watching the movie even if over and over again makes you laugh and think if the superstitions are all true. Cannot help but ask, who are the people keep saying those superstitions anyway.
The story is told in the eyes of Bobet, one of the grandsons of lolo or grandpa. The information was informed to one his daughters. The story was unfold in the start of the wake until its burial. However, you will laugh at the comic side of the Filipino superstitious traditions to it. There are tons actually. In reality it is true in the sense that we, Filipinos follow them because we tend to do it and nothing will go wrong. (Sampaguita Flores)
These are some superstitious beliefs that the family exercised:
You should not wear color Red attire during the wake because it is disrepectful for the dead or the family of the dead.
You should not let your tearsfall in the casket because it is bad luck.

You should not take a shower at the house of the dead's wake because it is also bad luck.
You should not clean the house during the wake.
You should cut the rosary so that a family member will not be next to passed away.

Some elements that were mentioned in WOTL Make Your Own Indie Film  do exist in the independent film 'Ded Na Si Lolo'. In the first part of WOTL, elements mentioned were:
Soxie H. Topacio-Director
(1) artistic director - Socrates Hernandez Topacio, also known as "Soxie" was born on June 19, 1952 in Manila, Philippines. He is also a resident artist at the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) since 1969. Soxie, an actor, director, production designer, set decorator, art director and miscelleanous crew. He has been an actor since 1972 for several TV shows. He started directing at 1977 for several drama anthologies, comedy shows, live shows, and many more.
(2) low to moderate budget - I think that the budget of this indie film is moderate because of the well-known artist.
(3) unsteady camera - Scenes outside the house are the unsteady cameras.
(4) poor lightning and sounds - I think that the lightning and sounds are poor because it was taken inside an old house. And also there are murmuring sounds or the sounds from the outside of the house.
(5) steady scenes - Scenes that are inside the house are the steady scenes because it is where the family always stay and so that you can understand them.
On the second part of WOTL Make Your Own Indie Film, elements mentioned were:
(1) there is no prostitute and a Callboy.
(2) gay element - There are gays in the film. Roderick Paulate is gay in the film. His friends are gay and he is working in a bar. Rainier Castillo is also gay in the movie but her mother didn't notice that until Roderick said it to her.
(3) use of slum areas or poverty porn - Most of the location is near in the slum areas. Where Gina Alajar and Manilyn Reynes lives.
(4) actors with raw talent (amateur) - Most of the actors and actresses in the movie are amatuer.
For the last part of the WOTL Make Your Own Indie Film, elements mentioned were:
(1) subtitle- In the film, there is no subtitle.
(2) 'taong grasa' - There is no 'taong grasa'.

Blog Entry No. 1 Essay No. 2 - MASDAN by Jonathan Joven

Blog Entry No.1 Essay No. 1 - CONVERSATION by Camille Pissarro [Saint Thomas, 1830 - Paris, 1903]

I chose in the Goggle Art Project the artwork of Camille Pissarro entitled Conversation. This artwork caught my attention because for me, it is simple and I know that many can relate in this artwork. I can say that this is an art because it has a medium and techniques used. Art is the combination of form and meaning.

The late 1870s to the 1880s were a major turning point in the careers of Pissarro and the other Impressionists. This change was symbolized by Monet, Renoir and Sisley's absence from the 6th Impressionists Exhibition held in 1881, and from this time onwards the Impressionists each struck out on their own path. Pissarro also made some new attempts to find a way out of this impasse amidst these circumstances in the late 1870s. These experiments included his work with prints, his experiments with a new genre, and his research into new techniques in concert with such younger artists as Gauguin, Seurat and Signac. We can find evidence of these changes in this Conversation.

Here we can spot the technical precursor to Pissarro's experiments with Seurat's pointillist techniques in the later 1880s. In terms of subject matter, Pissarro here changes his focus to figures, a shift from his earlier emphasis on the landscape. This work was exhibited in the 7th Impressionist Exhibition of 1882. Of the 36 works that Pissarro displayed in that exhibition, 27 of them, as here, portray the figural forms of the farmers around Pontoise. Pissarro's works avoid Millet's dramatically idealized images of farmers, concentrating rather on an unexaggerated depiction of farmers in their everyday surroundings. It is for this reason that Pissarro's farmers exhibit a greater validity and familiarity than that found in Millet. In addition, the unifying touch that creates all, whether figure, road, or tree, conveys a sense of the close bond between Pissarro's peasants and nature.
